Valmont Structures partnered with project lead Lighting Design Collective Oy to incorporate a customized Koli wooden pole (Orrella) for design flexibility and sustainability.
Playful Design Meets Serious Function
To renovate the recreation area of the Tikkurila riverbank in Vantaa, Finland, a landscape architecture competition was organized, which was won by LOCI Landscape Architects Oy. The starting point for the lighting plan of the Åvik playground — a key site in the recreation area — was to define a space with edge lighting, leaving room for an illuminated focal point in the middle of the playground. The pole chosen for the project was the wooden Koli Orrella pole from Tehomet, a Valmont company.
The pole resembles a tree featuring bird-like fixtures sitting on its branches, shining on objects in the environment. Lighting Design Collective Oy developed the idea for the pole and provided the design; Valmont engineers worked to ensure the design was functional and structurally sound. Valmont, a global leader in the design and manufacture of decorative lighting structures, worked with the designers to manage the production and installation.
Environmentally Friendly
Valmont achieves the lowest environmental footprint possible for all projects by manufacturing its wooden poles in a carbon-neutral factory where the environmental loads are reduced.
In addition, Koli wooden poles — including the customized Orrella shafts used in the Vantaa project — are responsibly resourced. Valmont harvests the raw materials from sustainably managed, PEFC certified forests and manufactures the shafts from GL28h glued-laminated timber.
